Education, Training and Outreach

Funding Goal: $15,000

Outreach, training, and science dissemination forms the core of the Animal Forensics Institute. We educate all experience levels — from summer workshops for high school students interested in forensic science, to discipline experts at national meetings, to frontline practitioners receiving training in new skills, free of charge.

Animal forensics education and training workshop with instructor and students

The Animal Forensics Institute is an advocate of education, for all ages and backgrounds interested in forensic science and animal crime investigations. As such, we create workshops to educate those interested in forensic science.

Since 2024, we have been holding summer workshops for high school students exploring their options and considering undertaking a degree in forensic science. The Forensic Science Institute is in a prime position to engage and excite these students with the prospect of investigating animal crimes and showing the reality of a job in forensic science. The institute has also held workshops with high school teachers, bringing a new aspect in educating the educator for widespread enhancement of early forensic education. The institute has been fortunate in providing all of this free of charge to the attendees, ensuring that students interested in forensic science get to experience the role regardless of their circumstances.

BPD Training

Beyond school, the Animal Forensics Institute has held workshops for new crime scene investigators alongside Baltimore Police Department. Here, we deliver a condensed package of insect, death scene and site survey investigation protocols. These workshops have been well received but were currently unable to focus on animal crime scene.

This project aims to continue these endeavors and expand our capacity for training the future forensic investigator with animal crime scenes.
